PRINT MATERIALS

Wax, wax-resin or resin?

The right ribbon depends on the printer, printhead, material and required resistance. Flat-head and near-edge ribbons must be selected for the correct printhead type.

How to choose the right thermal transfer ribbon

The correct thermal transfer ribbon is selected by combining four elements: printer and printhead technology, ribbon dimensions, substrate and required print durability.

Two ribbons with the same width and length are not automatically interchangeable. The formulation, winding direction and compatibility with a flat-head or near-edge printhead can directly affect barcode quality, print stability and ribbon performance.

Wax, wax-resin or resin?

Ribbon typeTypical useMain characteristics
Waxpaper labels and general-purpose identificationeconomical, good print speed, suitable where very high abrasion resistance is not required
Wax-resincoated paper, selected synthetic materials and packaging applicationshigher resistance to smudging and scratching, sharper print and broader substrate range
Resinsynthetic labels and demanding industrial applicationshigh resistance to abrasion, chemicals, heat and difficult operating conditions

Flat-head and near-edge ribbons are not the same

Thermal transfer printers can use different printhead technologies.

Flat-head ribbons are commonly used in desktop and industrial label printers.

Near-edge ribbons are often used in high-speed industrial and in-line printing applications, including flexible packaging.

A near-edge ribbon should not be treated as a universal replacement for a flat-head ribbon, or vice versa. Before selecting an alternative, confirm the printer model and printhead technology.

Which ribbon dimensions need to be checked?

When comparing an existing TTR ribbon with an alternative, check:

  • ribbon width
  • ribbon length
  • core diameter
  • winding direction — inside or outside
  • printer model
  • printhead technology
  • current ribbon code
  • material being printed

A wider ribbon is not always better. Ideally, the ribbon should cover the printed area without being unnecessarily wider than the label or printing zone. The core and winding direction also matter. Two rolls with the same ribbon formulation may still be mechanically incompatible with the same printer.

When should you test a different TTR configuration?

A different ribbon grade or configuration may be worth testing when:

  • printed information rubs off too easily
  • barcodes are difficult to read
  • print density is uneven
  • the ribbon wrinkles during printing
  • the label or packaging material has changed
  • higher resistance to abrasion, heat or chemicals is required
  • you need a shorter lead time
  • you are looking for a second source of supply

Changing the ribbon does not always mean moving to a more expensive grade. The goal is to match the ribbon to the actual printing process.

TTR ribbons for industrial printers

We can compare ribbon configurations for printers from manufacturers such as Zebra, Datamax / Honeywell, Carl Valentin, Sato, TSC, CAB, Intermec, Toshiba, Citizen and other industrial systems.

Compatibility is always confirmed from the exact printer and ribbon specification rather than from the brand name alone.

Looking for an alternative to your current TTR ribbon?

Send us:

  • the current ribbon label or product code
  • printer manufacturer and model
  • ribbon width and length
  • core diameter
  • inside or outside winding
  • label, film or other substrate
  • required print resistance

We will compare the specification and prepare an individual proposal. Where appropriate, we can also check whether a material sample can be supplied.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I select a ribbon for a printer?

Send the printer model, printhead type, current ribbon label and the substrate to be printed.

Are ribbons available for Datamax and Honeywell?

We can select ribbons for many Datamax and Honeywell models after confirming the model and roll parameters.

Can a ribbon print directly onto a bag?

Only on a suitable surface and after confirming the printer, printhead and ribbon configuration.
