What Are Pre-Opened Bags on a Roll and How Do They Work?

Pre-opened bags on a roll are ready-made bags connected by perforations and designed for fast manual, semi-automatic and automatic bagging processes.

What are pre-opened bags on a roll?

Pre-opened bags on a roll are ready-made bags connected in sequence by perforations. Each bag is open on one side, allowing a product to be inserted quickly during the packing process.

The opening, perforation, winding direction and roll construction are prepared for a repeatable bagging process. They are widely used for packing components, product kits, accessories, textiles, e-commerce orders and many other products.

The term pre-open describes the bag format and material-feeding method rather than one particular machine brand.

How does packing with pre-opened bags work?

The roll is mounted in a compatible bagging machine or packing station. The system advances the next bag and presents the open end ready for loading. A product can then be inserted manually by an operator or automatically by a feeding system. After loading, the bag is sealed and separated from the next bag at the perforation.

Which parameters matter?

Reliable operation depends on more than bag width and length. Two bags with identical external dimensions are not necessarily interchangeable.

  • film type and thickness
  • opening position
  • perforation and number of bags per roll
  • winding direction
  • core diameter, roll construction and dimensions

Which bagging systems use pre-opened bags?

Pre-opened roll bags can be specified for systems designed to process this type of material, including applications using Autobag / Sealed Air, Audion Speedpack, Pregis / Sharp Packaging and other automatic bagging equipment. The machine brand alone should not be used to determine compatibility: the machine model, existing roll specification, bag dimensions, core size, winding direction, perforation and opening construction should all be checked.

What types of pre-opened bags are available?

Clear bags make the packed product easy to see. White/clear configurations can combine product visibility with a readable area suitable for variable printing. Opaque pre-opened mailer bags can be used for e-commerce and fulfilment processes; a dark inner layer can help prevent the contents from being visible during transport.

Permanent artwork can be applied during bag production, including logos, brand colours, instructions and other static information. This should be distinguished from variable information printed later during the packing process.

What should you provide when requesting a quotation?

The best starting point is information about the material currently being used. Useful information includes a photo of the roll label, current technical specification, supplier quotation, photographs of the bag and roll, and the exact machine model. This helps avoid errors involving perforation, roll construction or winding direction.

FAQ

Are pre-opened bags only used on fully automatic machines?

No. They can also support semi-automatic packing and suitable manual packing stations.

Can an alternative to an existing bag roll be supplied?

In many cases, yes. The existing specification, roll label or supplier quotation provides the starting point. Suitability should then be confirmed for the specific machine and packing process.

Can pre-opened bags be printed?

Yes. Static branding can be applied during bag production. Suitable systems can also print variable information during packing.

What determines the price?

Price depends on factors including dimensions, film type and thickness, roll configuration, order volume and any custom printing.
